Chocolate Jell-O Cups are a colorful and yummy party food. Inexpensive and easy to make, they come in a variety of flavours and are popular with both kids and adults.

It’s hard to be original when it comes to party food. Most kids don’t like to try new things. Chocolate Jell-O Cups take two old favourites and combine them in a way that even fussy kids won’t be able to resist.

One of the best parts of this recipe is that it lets the birthday child be involved. They get to make the important decisions, such as whether to use white or milk chocolate and which flavours of Jell-O to choose. Jell-O can take 3-4 hours to set so put aside some time on the day before the party to make your Chocolate Jell-O cups and have some fun in the kitchen with the kids.

Ingredients for Chocolate Jell-O Cups:

  • 400g of white or milk cooking chocolate (preferably buttons)
  • Jell-O (2 or 3 flavours)
  • cupcake cases
  • pot or microwave bowl to melt chocolate
  • glass measuring cup
  • mixing bowl
  • metal tray

Makes about 30 Chocolate Jell-O Cups

How to make Chocolate Jell-O Cups:

  1. Begin by melting the chocolate. One way to do this is to fill a glass measuring cup with chocolate buttons and place it in a pot of simmering water. Stir the chocolate continuously as it melts and raise or lower the heat as needed.
  2. When the chocolate is melted turn off the heat but leave the measuring cup in the hot water. Holding a cupcake case in the palm of your hand, scoop two teasoons of melted chocolate into it. Use the back of the spoon to spread the chocolate evenly over the inside of the case until it is covered right to the edges. Don't make this chocolate layer too thin or it will break when the cupcake case is later removed.
  3. Place the chocolate-coated cupcake case on a tray. Repeat with other cases until there is no chocolate left. Place the tray of cupcake cases into the fridge to allow the chocolate to set.
  4. Wash the measuring cup as you will need it to make the Jell-O.
  5. Prepare the Jell-O using the instructions on the box. This should only take a few minutes but will involve boiling water so be careful if working with children.
  6. When the Jell-O has cooled slightly but not yet begun to set, take the chocolate cases from the fridge. Make sure the chocolate is set then pour the Jell-O into the cases and return them to the fridge. Within 3-4 hours your Chocolate Jelly Cups will be ready to eat.
